Good morning all. Still eating that turkey?

David Baxendale is here today for meetings with Bill and Kathleen.

On Thursday and Friday Cassie Nielsen and Diane Lampitt from Harcourt will be here for meetings with several staff members.

On a sad note...
Lisa Coleman's husband Jeff was in a serious car accident on Monday. The crash was forceful enough to break the seatbelt, one rib, a finger, and severely bruise his spleen. His internal organs were jostled around enough so that he is very sore and uncomfortable and has no memory of the accident itself. He is in Westerly Hospital and will probably get released today. Please keep Lisa and Jeff in your thoughts and prayers. I'll try to keep you posted.

Please remember to sign up for the company pot luck. The sign up sheet is now by the mailboxes.

Tuesday, November 29, 2005

Good morning all. Hope you had a happy and blessed Thanksgiving. Sick of turkey yet?

We are doing something different for the Christmas party this year. We have decided not to do the gift exchange as we have in the past. Instead, we are doing a Secret Santa in the office for those who wish to participate. In the days before Christmas we will draw names. Starting December 5, secretly leave a small gift for your Secret Santa recipient, such as a piece of candy or dollar store gift, on their desk or in mail slot. (A couple of times a week will be fine.) On December 22, leave your special Secret Santa gift. It should be a lot of fun trying to leave treats without being detected. So if you wish to participate, please email Barbara right away so she can make up the paper slips for drawing names.

Pot Luck Alert (no turkey please)
On Friday, Dec. 9, there will be a company-wide pot luck in the cafe downstairs. A sign-up sheet will soon be placed near the mail boxes. So pull out the cookbooks and start thinking about what delectable treats you'd like to share!

Thank You
A big thank you from Rosanne to all who helped with the kitchen duties. The refrigerators will be cleaned on Friday so please make sure you take your things (other than condiments) if you don't want them thrown away.

Please be aware that the new Oxford health insurance works differently than United did. Andrea went for a bone scan on November 1 (the day the new plan started) and her claim was denied because her doctor didn't get pre-approval for the test. She is appealing the charges but won't know the outcome for at least 20 days. If you had any diagnostic tests scheduled weeks ago, for after November 1, check with your physician about the proper pre-approval needed.

Valerie is working in New York today. Bill is in today and the rest of the week. Kerry M. is out today and the rest of the week. Cassie Nielsen and Diane Lampitt from Harcourt will be visiting Thursday and Friday.

Kerry Moriarty was the first to correctly respond that Canadian Thanksgiving falls on the second Monday in October. Kudos to Valerie for noting that this is the same as Columbus Day in the U.S.

There has been some anger, confusion, and venom spilled over my second question: What is the national sport in Canada? Most people - predictably - guessed ice hockey. Now, until recently this was incorrect. I always understood that lacrosse was the national sport, harking back to the days when the French controlled Canada. Astute Catholic Digest editor Kerry Weber pointed out a little thing called the Canada National Sports Act of 1994 which changed things. Having passed through Canadian Parliament, it provided that the official SUMMER sport of Canada is lacrosse, while the new official WINTER sport is ice hockey. So those of you (and it was many) replied with hockey, you were half right. So, for being half right, Congratu!

And, to admit my mistake, a new trivia question!
What Bayard employee is an accomplished ice hockey player in his/her own right, and is good friends with hockey legend Guy LaFleur?

Bayard would like to wish all its employees a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday, and we would like to use this holiday as an occasion to thank our employees for their hard work, dedication, and professionalism. Please feel free to leave at 2 p.m. today to enjoy a little extra time with your family. Again, Happy Thanksgiving!

Sue's out today. She's given reins of the blog to me (Brad) for today . She will soon regret the error.

The forces of good and evil are at war! Chelsea Groton and Montauk Professional Building are - as we speak - engaged in an ultimate death match to determine Bayard's parking fate.

No, that is an exaggeration of sorts. Word is that things have calmed down between these bitter foes (and just in time for the holiday). The plan looks to be that our parking spots will be assigned in the near future. This plan is ongoing so please stay tuned to this blog as events warrant.

In other news...

You may have noticed this morning that prices have risen on our vending machines. THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY - stop begging me for change, I only have 100s (now you all want to be my friends). Bayard's covert operatives in the snack and soft drink industries are currently infiltrating their supply lines. Expect the prices to perhaps decrease below their previous levels in the near future. To do this, there may be a brief disruption in our snack food supplies, but we won't lose any soda. Please don't panic.

Stonington High takes on rival Westerly High tomorrow in the infamous Turkey Day game. I know Katie will tell you to root for the Bulldogs, but she doesn't have control of the blog. I do. GO BEARS!

Trivia question is back! As always, first to e-mail will get a blog mention (probably later today). America is not the only country to have a day of giving thanks. Our friendly neighbors to the north (we call them 'Canadians') also have a national holiday called Thanksgiving (we call it 'Canadian Thanksgiving'). When is it celebrated? And, since that is kind of a hard question, I'll throw in a seemingly easy trick question as a bonus: What is the national sport of Canada?

Thought for the day: "Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-time is twelve minutes. This is not coincidence." ~ Erma Bombeck

Finally, Bayard thanks everyone for their hard work and dedication and wishes everyone a fun, safe, spirited, and blessed Thanksgiving!

The bank asks us to please bear with them as their attorneys continue to press the parking issue. CG informs us that the bank is not worried about the resolution but does feel frustration regarding the changing situation. The parking assignments (below) might change again by week's end as the negotiations continue. As a result of today's meeting, Bayard can use:

--9 spaces off Montauk along the medical building; please do not use the spaces to the right of the stairs that we initially thought we could use
--11 spaces within in the bank parking lot (off Bank street); this means we can park in some spaces reserved for CG customers
--17 spots in the garage

Again, these assignments might change perhaps, even, this week. We apologize for the inconvenience to employees. Further, please be assured that we will retain 40 spaces ultimately since Bayard and CG agree that this is the term of the lease; also, CG does assure us that it has legal right to these spaces. Thanks to all for your patience.--Kathleen

Alison is out sick today.

I'll be taking a vacation day tomorrow (Wed) and will ask Brad if he would like to do the blog in my absence.--Sue

Monday, November 21, 2005

There is a meeting this morning at 10:30 with the bank and the lawyers regarding the parking situation. They will be seeking an injunction which should result in more parking spaces for us. Please keep you fingers crossed.

Kathleen and Valerie are working in New York today.

Bill is working in Minnesota this week.

Charlene is on vacation all week.

_____________

Our Bayard Christmas Party will be on Friday, December 16th at the Lighthouse Inn in New London.

We were wondering if everyone enjoys the Gift Exchange and if we should continue it this year? If so, what would you think would be a good theme? ie: a color, letter, etc.

Please send your replies to Kerry at kmoriarty@bayard-inc.com.

Thanks.--Kerry

Parking Update
Kathleen and the bank lawyers are still working on the parking situation. We have been asked to park in particular areas in a particular order. We are allowed to park next to the medical building on the parking garage side. Please, if you arrive to work early, park there first, before taking up the spaces on the upper parking area. The third area to park is behind the brick medical building (not on the fence side). The bank has agreed to give us 2 more parking spots in the upper parking lot, as well as 2 more spots in the parking garage. Check with your manager for approval to park in the parking garage. Also the bank has asked their employees to park on the street, so they could accommodate our parking needs. There should never be a problem of snow and ice build-up, as it will be removed before we arrive.

Today is an anniversary date for Betty also. One year ago today she joined us. Congratulations Betty! Have a blessed day!

Yesterday's luncheon was a success. Sorry to be such a scrooge about the sandwiches. Just wanted to make sure we didn't run out of food before our guests had plenty to eat. If you're still hungry, come see me and I'll treat you to something in the snack machine.

A special thanks to Kerry and Rosanne for helping set up for the lunch and clean up afterwards.

It's a special day for Jane and Amy. Today marks their 7th anniversary with Twenty-Third. Happy anniversary!

Valerie is taking a vacation day today.

Bill is in for a short while this morning and will then be on his way to Dallas. Next week he will be working from his office in Minnesota. Please feel free to contact him there.

Comp Books
Please email me if you need copies of any books as comp. We're not providing comps of the new titles as we did in the past as we no longer have the room to store them. In order to save on postage and processing fees, we will send one comp order to St. Louis every 2 weeks or so.

Bathrooms
Please be considerate when using the rest rooms. There often seems to be bits of paper on the floor.

Lunch Room
A lock has been installed on the lunch room door. The combination is 134. Please see Bert if you have any questions.

Parking Update
Please bear with us with the parking situation. New signs have been put up in the parking lot. Kathleen is working on it. It is her understanding with the bank that we are legally allowed to park anywhere except the spots where the Chelsea Bank signs are hung. We'll keep you updated as well as we can.

Good morning! Hope everyone had a good weekend. Yes, it's true, I've reclaimed my role as company blogger. Brad did a tremendous job keeping us all informed and entertained and I can only aspire to be as clever and witty as he.

The first person to correctly answer Friday's trivia questions was JANICE! She was the first to respond that actor George C. Scott refused his Best Actor Oscar in 1970 for portraying the title character in the film Patton.

An Invitation
Kathleen Stauffer and Bill Huebsch are inviting you to join the Bayard Board for lunch in the cafe this Tuesday, Nov 15 at noon. Please plan to be prompt at noon as several members of the Board will make comments as lunch gets underway. It will be honor to have you join us!

Friday, November 11, 2005

Here is the latest round of questions from the suggestion box (answered by Bill, Kathleen and Valerie). We are aware there are new questions in there and will get to them as soon as we can.
--Kathleen

Why does the loud copier have to be by the people who are on the phone with customer service?
We will look into replacing this copier with a quieter version as soon as that is practical. Originally, the copier was supposed to be in the library, but the floor plan was changed to accommodate much-needed office and archive space.

It would be nice if we had some type of white board with employees’ names listing who is here and who is out (sick, vacation, business, or personal).
A white board will be hung by the mailboxes shortly. Sue will keep it up-to-date. Also, Sue and Bradley will work together so the blog and the white board will not conflict. For example, we don’t want the white board to say that Bill is out when the blog says Bill is in … and so on. We can’t have anybody mistaking Bill for Kathleen or Kathleen for Bill. There is a rumor that this has been happening.

The November Catholic Digest features the article: “The Healing Power of Massage”. I think would be great to offer massages on an employee appreciation day.
We will try to raffle off a massage at the Christmas party; also, Val is looking into whether our health plan has holistic options. We also will continue with the cubicle decorating at Christmas and provide prizes (as we did during the Open House) for that. We will provide a list of guidelines closer to Christmas.

It is 32 degrees outside. When is the air conditioning going to be turned off?
We did ask the bank about this twice. Since the system is programmed by computer, seasonal ups and downs do pose problems. It is not difficult to change, but the computer does what it’s told to do until we tell it otherwise. (Don’t you wish your spouse was like that?) But, anyway: Let your manager know when you are uncomfortable, and your manager will notify Bert.

Thanks, everyone, for your questions!--Kathleen

Attention all coffee drinkers!
Now that we have two brand new, modern coffee makers, we'd like to try to find a home for the old 3-burner coffee system. It still works but just needs a little cleaning up. If you have any interest in claiming it, please let me know asap. We need to have it removed from kitchen by the end of the day Monday. --Sue

On a different note, to give you a heads up, we will be hosting the Bayard Board meeting here Tuesday the 15th so you may see a few unfamiliar faces. Let's put on our Sunday best and really make our guests feel welcome!

We now have a post office box for New London. The address for this box is:

P.O. Box 6015
New London CT 06320

That's all for now. Have a great lunch!--Sue

Today is Friday, and the official end to my reign of terror over the Bayard blog. Come Monday, Sue will once again be updating you on the comings and goings of Bayardville on a permanent basis. If you have information you deem blog-worthy, please e-mail to her and she will give your messages their day in court.

The INs and OUTs
Dan Connors (who is back in today) received e-mail from Julie on Wednesday. She is safe and fine. This is wonderful news! She returns to the U.S. tomorrow night.

Kathleen is in, but Bill is out. Need I reiterate my theory on this?

Barbara is out. Good thing it's not payday.

Friday Trivia
Today is Veteran's Day. So, if you know any veterans, be sure to thank them for serving their country. Veteran's Day was formerly known as Armistice Day in recognition of the end of World War I. Famously, the armistice was signed at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, pretty cool huh? In a fateful twist of fate (dig that redundancy), General George S. Patton was born on this day in 1885 (he wasn't a general then though). What actor memorably refused his Oscar for portraying the general in the 1970 film Patton? Usual rules apply, first to e-mail me (Brad) with the correct answer gets a mention on Monday's blog.

Thought for the Day: "I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity." ~ Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower

Thursday, November 10, 2005

Greetings fellow office and cubicle dwellers. It's Thursday and I really can't think of anything funny to say about it. With the sun obscured by clouds, my powers of humor are greatly diminished. Clouds are my kryptonite.

On to the news...

Second Notice: Please wash your dishes after using them and place them in the dishrack next to the sink to dry. There should be plenty of dish soap and utensils of the scrubby variety available in the kitchen area. A little effort by a lot of people goes a long way!

Apparently we've been dumping a lot of coffee at the close of business each day. If you're going to make coffee in the afternoon, try using only half a packet of coffee grounds and saving the remainder in the refrigerator for the next afternoon.

IF you are leaving the office at 5:00 P.M. or later, please check that you are the last person leaving before turning out the lights such that any remaining employees will not be left in the dark. Conversely, if you are the last person leaving, be sure to turn off the lights (the switches are next to the coat rack).

Kathleen, Dan, and Julie are still out. Kathleen and Dan will be back tomorrow. Julie will be back on Monday.

Thought for the Day: ""Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers." ~ T. S. Eliot

Wednesday, November 09, 2005

Good morning fellow employees. It's Wednesday; but not only is it November 9, it is the Feast of the Dedication of the Latin Basilica in Rome. So what are we doing here?? Let's get to Rome!

The INs and OUTs

Dan Smart and Bill are back in the office today. They look so relieved to be in New England again after what must have been only the harshest of climates in Orlando, Florida.

Kathleen and Dan Connors are still in Montreal for LWC meetings.

Julie is still in Paris. Please pray for her safety as France is definitely undergoing some trying times.

Katie Collings is out sick today. Which means I'm going to have to scan my own stories today, which also means I'm going to be completely lost. Great!

The Results

CAROL was the first person to correctly answer yesterday's trivia question. She was the first to e-mail that JOHN BAYARD ANDERSON, a representative from Illinois, ran a moderately successful independent candidacy for president in 1980. He garnered 7% of the popular vote in an election that saw then California Governor Ronald Reagan defeat the incumbent President Jimmy Carter. Ralph Nader wishes he could get 7%!
More trivia on Friday.

"NO!" was the response from the voters of the Town of Stonington when it came to the issue of hiring a town manager and expanding the board of selectmen to five. FYI.

Thought for the Day: "There's no way to know for sure without finding out what a 'kg' is, and my belief, as an American, is that if I have to start understanding the metric system, then the terrorists have won." ~ Dave Barry

Tuesday, November 08, 2005

Good morning Bayard. Brad here. Good to be back in the Blogosphere. It's another quiet day in office news.

Kathleen, Bill, Julie, and Dan^2 (Smart and Connors) are away.

Today is Election Day. I hope everyone takes a few minutes out of their day to visit the polls. Make your voice heard! ¡Viva la revolución!

I had intended to do another trivia question last Friday, but I was unexpectedly sent to North Carolina. As such, I'll do one today. Same rules as before: First person to e-mail me with the correct answer gets a mention in tomorrow's blog. And if you get the extra point question, your name will be in bold AND italics.

Q: What popular independent candidate challenged Democratic President Jimmy Carter and Republican California Governor Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential election?

Extra point: What was his middle name? (Extra point clue: it's found on this blog post somewhere)

Correction: Kathleen will be in the NY office on Thursday and not Mon, Tues, Wed as previously announced.

Good morning all. Hope you had a splendid weekend. We certainly couldn't complain about the weather.

Andrea will be at a video editing company all day Tuesday. She'll be in sometime Tuesday night to check on things here. However, if you need to contact her, just leave a message in her voice mail, which she checks often.

Friday, November 04, 2005

Good morning all. Happy Friday (and pay day)!

As mentioned on Wednesday, be sure to disconnect your computer from the
network before leaving for the weekend. I hope you haven't forgotten our
little 'shame and scorn' discussion. I know I haven't.

Julie will be out all next week. She is in Paris for the Bayard union
meeting. And I'm pretty sure that's Paris, France, not Paris, Texas (though
from what I understand they're pretty much the same anyway)

Dan Connors is out today. He will be in Montreal for LWC and GWT meetings
until Thursday. He will be back in the office next Friday (Nov. 11).
--Brad

Kathleen will be out Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week. She'll be at

Oxford Update - I received my Oxford membership card in the mail yesterday (Thursday), so be on the lookout for yours.

There was a surplus in Amy's water fund so we purchased a new thermal coffee pot to replace the one we've had for many years. God only knows what was living in that thing! This will keep the coffee fresh and hot all day long. No more excuses for sleeping on the job.

The Board of Directors will meet on Nov 15 in New London. The Executive Committee for North America met this week to prepare for that meeting, to brainstorm solutions to our challenges, and to update one another regarding our PMT initiatives – or, three-year plans for growth.

Bradley is in North Carolina exploring the Spanish publications marketplace. Julie had a phone interview with the actor Jon Voigt on Thursday, and she’ll be going to Paris next week as New London’s rep for the employee union meeting. Our team is not a part of the union, which is European, but we are invited guests all the same.

Dan C, Steve Mueller, Deborah and Kathleen will travel to Montreal on Sunday to present the Living With Christ USA strategy and to discover what other LWC teams around the world are doing at the international meeting next week. Deborah will return Tuesday, Kathleen will return to work Thursday and Dan Connors will be back on November 14.

Also, thanks to everyone who worked very hard to make the Open House a success. Your efforts speak for themselves, and many of our visitors expressed deep appreciation for our Bayard team’s warm hospitality. Interdesign, Ltd., our architecture firm, asked if their thanks specifically could be communicated to the whole team. They noted that they have designed many, many buildings but this is the first time they have been invited back to see the job they’ve done. They said it was a wonderful experience to be able to do that.

Wow! Now that I've given everyone information load, have a Disney day!!!

Thursday, November 03, 2005

Hi everyone, I'm running the blog while Brad is gone. Please try to contain your enthusiasm.

Who's in and out: Rosanne is out this afternoon through Monday. She will return to the office on Tuesday.

Here's some interesting information I pulled from the web about the flu:

How do you know it’s the flu?

The term “flu” is tossed around casually enough to confuse what actually qualifies as an influenza infection. There is no real “stomach flu,” for instance, and while the flu shares some symptoms with the common cold, they are very different viruses. Far more than a case of the sniffles, influenza typically comes on with a miserable mixture of fever, chills and body aches. The onset of a high temperature—101 degrees to 102 degrees Fahrenheit in adults, and higher for children—is sudden, and the patient can hardly bear to stand upright.

And the flu bug is just getting started. Because it’s a disease of the respiratory tract (nose and mouth to lungs), flu is also characterized by coughing, stuffy nose and sore throat. The cough, dry and unproductive in early flu stages, is believed to be the result of fragile tissue being destroyed in the trachea.

Abdominal pain and nausea are less common, except in children, and everyone can expect a painfully pounding headache, especially after a coughing fit or in response to light. Other fun stuff includes pink eye and the requisite runny nose. The medical term for runny nose is rhinorrhea. Tell your boss you have a contagious case of rhinorrhea, and see how quickly that gets you a day pass.

That’s the flu. Once you know these symptoms, it’s hard to miss. But if you’re too groggy to diagnose yourself, call the office and tell them you’re going to see a doctor. Let your GP decide if you should go in to work. You may need a physician’s note anyway, and a formal diagnosis removes any skepticism on the part of your employer.

How the flu spreads:

Like all viruses, influenza needs a host in order to survive and multiply. The flu spreads from one person to another when tiny droplets of contaminated saliva are airborne by a cough or a sneeze. Hanging in the air, they find a new home when inhaled into an unsuspecting host.
Flu virus can also survive for several hours on a surface—a telephone handset, a copying machine, a doorknob, a screwdriver—before a host comes along, gets the virus on his or her hands and then internalizes the virus by touching the eyes, nose or mouth.

It’s possible to pass the flu along 24 hours before you even exhibit symptoms. The virus has a quick incubation period, and most people will fall ill within one to three days of becoming infected. You may still be contagious up to a week after symptoms first set in (a few days longer for children). In otherwise healthy adults, influenza lasts between seven and 14 days, with at least three days of severe symptoms.

No-nonsense tips:

Finally, a few ideas you can use and share in the workplace to help stop the spread of flu germs:

If you know you’re sick with the flu, stay home.
Get a flu shot, which not only protects you but helps prevent contagion.
Within a day of becoming ill, ask your doctor about antiviral medications, which can shorten the episode and contain the virus.
Be especially cautious between late December and early March, the peak of flu season.
Sneeze or cough into your elbow, not into your hands.
Clean phones, doorknobs and desktops with alcohol swabs.
Throw used tissues away!
Wash your hands and face often with hot, soapy water.
During flu season, never let anyone lick your keyboard.

Good day Bayardians. Isn't it a Bayard-riffic day?

Sue Cameron is out sick today. She hopes to be in tomorrow. Feel better Sue!

Valerie is in NY today. However, she still had time before she left on a jet train to give me this blog-worthy message:
Information regarding our new Oxford health plan: Our group # is BI82116, our group name is Bayard, Inc. If you are looking on Oxford’s website for physician listings, our plan is the Laurel C FREEDOM plan.

Brad (I) will be out of the office and in North Carolina on Thursday and Friday this week. I will be back in the office on Monday. Sue (provided she is feeling better and in the office) will be updating the blog in my absence.

A message from Charlene: Some upgrades will be made to our network over the weekend, so before you leave on Friday, please make sure your computer is not connected to it. Bear in mind, if you do leave your computer connected to the network, the tech guys can tell, and it will be noted, and you will endure the scorn and shame that comes with being "the one who forgot to disconnect their computer from the network." Can you imagine the unparalleled humiliation? I don't even want to think about it. There will be a reminder about this on Friday's blog update.

Two blog notes: 1) There is now a link to Nick Wagner's comprehensive blog on the right side of this page; 2) You (yes you!) can now comment on daily blog posts by simply clicking on the comments link below each post. So, if you have some choice words for the blogmaster, that is the place to go. Please remember, my exterior may seem tough, but I cry on the inside.

Good morning all! A special message to those of you who did not have to cross the Gold Star Bridge on your way to work this morning ... LUCKY!

Thanks to everyone who helped make yesterday's Open House a wild success. A recent USA Today/Gallup poll shows that a good time was had by all (margin of error +/- 1.5%). It was so good, we got press!

Notes from Kerry M.: The Flu shot clinic is still on for Today, November 1st from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. The charge is $10.00. See Kerry M. for a consent form.

Please RSVP to Kerry if you are attending Gwen Costello's party at the Flood Tide Restaurant, 2:00 pm on Friday, November 18th. If anyone has any questions, let Kerry know.

A Final Reminder: The Executive Committee meeting will be going on all day in the Conference Room. Oh to be a fly on the wall in that meeting! The facts, figures, and forecasts will be hot enough to warm the room (and the conference room is a cold room).
