Invitation From Julie
Hello everyone!
Starting next week on Thursday, August 2, I will be performing as the lead role of Rosalind in Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It in New London. It would be great to see you there! Here are the details:
What: The comedy As You Like It
By whom: William Shakespeare Performed by Flock Theatre (http://www.flocktheatre.org/)
When: August 2-5 (Thurs-Sun), August 8-12 (Wed-Sun), all at 7 p.m. WEATHER PERMITTING (it’s outdoors)
Where: Waterfront Park, behind Union Train Station, New London
What’s it about? Rosalind, daughter of a banished duke, flees from certain death into the Forest of Arden with her cousin Celia and disguises herself as a boy, which makes for much mischief among everyone she meets in the forest, particularly for Orlando, the man she loves. The setting of the show — not the language, of course — has been modernized, and we are making some modern and pop culture references (e.g. “The Simple Life” with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie).
Tickets: May be purchased at the show. $15 for adults; $12 students, seniors, and military; $10 kids under 12.
Also, Wednesdays and Thursdays are pay-what-you can nights. On those evenings, please bring a canned or boxed good for the food pantry of New London’s First Congregational Church.
Seating: First-come, first-serve. There is one small bleacher section, but mostly, and especially if you want to sit up front, which I recommend, you should bring chairs. It’s on the pier, so blankets probably aren’t the most comfy for sitting down for two hours.
Parking: There are parking garages near the train station, or else street parking.
Amenities: We will have a concessions stand selling snacks, non-alcoholic drinks, and T-shirts. There will be bathrooms of available (probably the portable kind; we’re not allowed to use the train station building, alas)
Very Important Info: The play takes place behind the train station, which means that weekday shows are noisy at times due to the passing trains. Do not feel shy about sitting in front!
Weekend shows — Sat, Sun — are much less noisy, with only a couple of trains coming by.
I encourage you to: Sit up front. Laugh as much as you wish. Let me know if you’re coming so I can be sure to say hi afterwards
For more info: www.flocktheatre.org 860-443-3119 or ask Julie. Thanks! I hope you can come! :)

Foreign Stamps
If you receive any mail with foreign postage stamps, please give them to Sue. She will forward them to Pat Kluepfel for a priest friend who can use them to raise money for his ministry overseas.

Thought for the Day
Only for today, I will do at least one thing I do not like doing; and if my feelings are hurt, I will make sure that no one notices.

Message from Bret
Recently I traveled to Ottawa with others from Bayard Canada and France to sign the renewed licensing contract between Bayard Canada, Saint Paul University, and Bayard Inc. (USA). This agreement renews our valued partnerships with the University, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and our colleagues in Canada and authorizes us to continue to publish Living with Christ in service to the Church in America. The term of the agreement extends this authorization and our collaboration to 2018.

What follows, is the talk shared by Rev. Dale M. Schlitt, O.M.I. (Rector of Saint Paul University) at the conclusion of the agreement signing. I think his insights address well our valued relationship, the ministry of the Oblates, and the significance of Living with Christ in our effort to serve God's people.

On this happy occasion we gather to sign a series of documents that will renew the partnership between Bayard Press Canada Inc - represented here today by Father Marcel Poirier, President of Bayard's Board of Directors, and Ms. Suzanne Spino, President of Bayard Press Canada Inc. - and the University of Saint Paul. We also have the honor of welcoming among us Mr. Bruno Frappat, President of Bayard Inc, as well as Mr. Hubert Chicou, CEO for the Americas and General Delegate Director for Bayard; Mr. Ronald Albert, Director General of Bayard Canada's religious division; and Mr. Bret Thomas, President of Bayard Inc (USA). A warm welcome to everyone.

We now have the experience of several years of warm and fruitful collaboration between Bayard and Saint Paul. We work together first of all to produce materials in support of our Churches and Christian communities as they carry out their evangelizing mission in the twenty-first century. In our desire as well to serve the increasingly diverse societies in which we live, we collaborate more and more in the production and distribution of materials that will enhance the spiritual lives of those around us and encourage the development of ever more just and caring societies.
This is an adventure we are taking together, and despite the numerous challenges we face, we boldly dream of helping our churches and communities become more Christ-like in love and compassion each day.

Here in Canada we confront some particular challenges that stem from the declining interest of many Canadians, both French- and English-speaking, in institutional religion. As fewer and fewer priests are ordained, we also ask ourselves how our Catholic churches can continue to prosper. In the United States we face similar problems. There, however, the market, although difficult to penetrate, is vast and full of possibility, as exemplified by Novalis, through which we provide our readers with materials to enrich their prayer lives. I suspect, then, that not only our English edition of the Sunday missal Living With Chris, but also the forthcoming Spanish edition, will meet with clear success.

Before closing, I would like to take a moment to thank all those who have worked so hard to review our wonderful, collaborative relationship and to develop fine texts that will facilitate our working together in partnership over the coming years. I am thinking especially of Ms. Suzanne Spino and Mr. Ronald Albert from Bayard, and Dr. Chantal Beauvais and Mr. Michael O'Hearn from Saint Paul.

The Oblate Founder, Bishop Eugene DeMazenod, wrote back in the early 1800's that the Oblates should leave nothing undared, Nillinquendum inausum, in their efforts to spread the Gospel. I understand that the first Augustinians of the Assumption took their public vows in 1851, and swore to combat irreligion in a Europe suffering from the doubt sown by,
among others, Voltaine and Diderot. They used all legitimate means and approaches they could think of to lead others to embrace the Gospel. May we together, Bayard and Saint
Paul, be ever faithful to these imperatives. Ad multos annos.

I want to thank Julie Rattey for translating the French text into English.

Message from Kathy Chesto
Dear Friends,

I have been wanting to do more than pray for peace for quite a long time. This idea began as something I hoped to do with the people of my own parish. Then, I thought, why not town, then, why not the world, while we were at it.

Please read the invitation below. If you would like to see more, go to www.kathleenchesto.com but I want to make sure you at least see the invitation. We already have people joining us in five different countries. If you choose to stand for peace, you won't be standing alone.

And I am hoping you will want to be one of seven who stand for peace - and that you will know many people to invite to join you.

Peace.
Kathy Chesto
PLEASE READ ON.

Seven for Peace Project

"I am only one; but I am still one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do something I can do." Helen Keller

Will you stand with seven for peace?

We have reached a terrible stalemate in our quest for peace. We do not know how to achieve stability in the Middle East, how to bring our troops home, how to get beyond the horns of the dilemma on which we are caught. We all agree we want peace, but our very conversations are filled with angry rhetoric and hateful recriminations. As we argue, people continue to die, not only in the Middle East, but in conflicts all over our globe.

It is time to stop. To stand in silence and honor our dead, to think thoughts of peace, to silently pray prayers of peace, and to send that positive energy into our world.

On the seventh day of the seventh month of 2007, you are invited to light a candle for peace and remembrance and to stand silently outside your home at 7 PM for seven minutes. Invite seven people to do the same.

For seven months, we will continue to stand on the seventh day of the month. If each person invited seven more, by the seventh month, we could circle the globe. If each person stands at 7 PM in his or her own time zone, then every hour of that day, somewhere on earth, at least one person will be lighting a candle for peace.

Will you be one of seven who stand for peace?

"Few will have the greatness to change history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation." Robert F. Kennedy.

Thought for the Day
Only for today, I will be happy in the certainty that I was created to be happy, not only in the other world but also in this one.
